The Design Confessional

Design Matters approached us with a bold request: to create an installation that would engage the audience at a large design conference while inviting them to participate directly in shaping the experience.

Context

Let’s be honest: When was the last time you filled out a questionnaire? Yeah, we thought so. We’ve all been there, staring at those endless rows of checkboxes, wondering if anyone actually reads our responses.

But what if I told you there’s a way to make data collection not just bearable, but downright exciting? The goal was to craft an interactive, data-driven installation that would transform passive viewers into active participants.

Solution

We worked closely with our founder and data artist Tiziana Alocci to deliver a dynamic data visualisation wall that combines art, design, and real-time audience input. Attendees were encouraged to answer questions and place stickers, contributing their personal insights to an evolving visual landscape. Every interaction—whether a choice of color, placement of a sticker, or a response to a question—altered the artwork, making each person part of the installation itself.

Our approach blended data storytelling with low-fi and sustainable materials, turning abstract information into a tangible, emotional experience. By making data feel personal and participatory, we opened up new possibilities for audience engagement, resulting in an installation that was as thought-provoking as it was visually stunning.

Impact

The installation attracted more than 1,000 attendees (live stream and in-person in total) over the course of the 3-day event, each contributing to the evolving artwork. This approach sparked meaningful conversations about the intersection of art, design, and technology, and also showcased how interactive experiences can deepen audience connections in real time.
