Making the invisible visible

NECESSITY is a London-based studio working at the intersection of strategy, data, design, and AI. We help organisations transform complex information into products, experiences, and systems people can understand, use, and remember.

Why organisations work with us

  1. Technical expertise without technical jargon
We work across data systems, AI workflows, software, generative media, and interactive technologies, translating complexity into tools and experiences you can actually use.

  2. Design thinking shaped by culture and art
Founded by award-winning data artist Tiziana Alocci, our approach combines strategic thinking with a strong visual and cultural sensibility. We believe functionality and emotional resonance should coexist.

  3. Built for ambiguity and experimentation
Many of the projects we work on have never been done before. We prototype quickly, test ideas early, and help you reduce the risk of ambitious concepts before full production.

  4. Flexible across organisations and scales
We collaborate with startups, agencies, cultural institutions, research organisations, and enterprise teams, adapting to existing workflows rather than forcing rigid processes.

  5. More than 15 years of cross-disciplinary experience
Our background spans data visualisation, communication design, emerging technologies, curation, publishing, research, product development, and digital product thinking, allowing us to connect disciplines that rarely speak to each other.

Our Story

NECESSITY.INK was born in 2018 and extends the methodology developed by our founder Tiziana Alocci, award-winning data artist and public speaker working at the intersection of data, sound and visual systems.

Our work focuses on transforming complex, often invisible datasets into experiences that are both technically rigorous and emotionally resonant.

Our projects span global brands, cultural institutions and research organisations, with a consistent approach: treating data not just as information, but as a material to design with.

NECESSITY brings together strategists, designers, developers, creative technologists, researchers, and AI specialists across London, Barcelona, Milan, and beyond.

Our team combines backgrounds in data visualisation, software development, creative coding, project management, digital product design, moving image, sound design, branding, art curation, and emerging technologies. This allows us to approach projects from multiple perspectives at once, balancing technical precision, strategic thinking, and strong creative direction.

Work With Us

We’re looking for curious minds interested in data, sound, and experimental visualisation. This is a hands-on opportunity to work on real projects inside the studio.

How We Work

OUR CREATIVE PROCESS

A studio model designed for complex projects

Each project is developed through our team of talents, including developers, designers, engineers and scientists.

This structure allows us to scale from focused prototypes to large-scale installations and product development, while maintaining a high level of creative and technical control.

From internal systems to public-facing experiences, we help organisations make the invisible visible.

• Data Strategy
Turning complex information into actionable direction.

• Reporting & Dashboards
Designing clearer systems for analysis, communication, and decision-making.

• Marketing & Brand Activations
Transforming data into campaigns, installations, digital experiences, and audience engagement.

• Product Development
Building tools, platforms, AI workflows, and data-driven products.

Frequent Asked Questions

Everything you might want to know before starting a project with us

  • Costs vary depending on scope, complexity and timeline. Most projects start from £8k, while smaller prototypes or exploratory work can start lower. Long-term collaborations are also available through monthly retainers.

You can receive a tailored estimate using our brief builder, usually within 48 hours.

  • It depends on the scope. Small prototypes or exploratory projects typically take 1–3 weeks, while larger projects such as reporting systems, campaigns or installations usually take 4–12 weeks. More complex collaborations or product development can extend beyond that timeline.

  • The easiest way is to complete the brief builder or book a short call with our team. We’ll review your idea, clarify the scope and recommend the most suitable approach for your project.

  • Yes. Many projects start with an idea that needs to be explored, refined or tested.
We can help you sense-check the concept, evaluate the technical feasibility and build a prototype to demonstrate the idea before committing to full production.

  • Yes, rapid prototyping is often the best way to explore a concept before committing to a full project. We regularly develop proof-of-concept prototypes for internal presentations, pitches and early product exploration.

  • Yes. We often collaborate with organisations preparing internal proposals, funding applications or innovation pitches by developing prototypes, visuals or supporting concepts.

  • Yes. We can support campaigns and launches by transforming data into visual content, experiences, digital assets or installations that communicate ideas in compelling ways.
